Does Getting Dental Implants Hurt?

01-11-2023

When you lose a tooth, dental implants are the best way to replace it. Although there are other ways to replace your tooth, a dental implant gives new teeth a firm foundation. Implants anchor your new lifelike teeth into your jaw, acting like the roots of your teeth hidden below your gums.

Dental implants have some very clear benefits— they give your new smile unparalleled support, allowing you to regain the confidence to smile, laugh, talk, and eat. But despite the attractive benefits, you may worry about whether the surgery to place implants hurts.

Understanding dental implant surgery will help you prepare. At Kreate Dental, we’re here to provide you with all the information you need before your treatment.

In this guide, we’ll look at dental implant placement so you know what to expect.

Why Might You Need Dental Implants?

There are a few reasons to get dental implants:

  • You have a failing tooth requiring extraction
  • You already have a missing tooth
  • You have a bridge or denture but want the stability of implants

Who Can Have Dental Implants?

If you’ve lost or are about to lose a tooth, dental implants may be a good option for you. Before we can place an implant, we need to assess whether your jawbone can provide adequate support.

Losing teeth can weaken your jaw. Once the tooth has gone, the jaw can deteriorate.

We’ll take scans and X-rays of your teeth and jaws to check they’re healthy enough to support implants. In cases where the bone has already become thinner, you may need a bone graft first.

Your general health is another important consideration. We need to ensure your jaw has the capacity to heal.

How Long Does Dental Implant Surgery Take?

The length of your treatment will depend on whether you’re having single implants, Full Mouth Implants (sometimes referred to as All-on-4 or Same Day Teeth), or implanted dentures.

Single implant surgery won’t take as long as Full Mouth implants or implanted dentures because we place fewer implants. That said, we need to place single implants in stages as your jaw will need to heal.

It can take at least three months for your jaw to heal around your dental implant. In some cases, it takes longer. Full Mouth Implants use a different technique, so there’s no wait after your initial procedure.

Do Dental Implants Hurt?

Although dental implant surgery is an advanced procedure, there’s no need to worry about pain or discomfort. Before your procedure, we’ll give you an anaesthetic. This ensures you won’t feel anything during the process.

Additionally, we use modern techniques coupled with the latest technology. This ensures the best possible experience for you.

If you feel anxious about your dental implant surgery, we also provide oral and IV sedation. Both options place you in a relaxed state. Although you’ll remain conscious during the procedure, it will almost feel like you’re in a dream. IV sedation is the more powerful option.

What Is Dental Implant Recovery Like?

Immediately after dental implant surgery, you’ll need to make a few adjustments to your diet. You’re going to find chewing difficult for a few days, so you’ll need to stick to softer food and build up to your ural meals as your strength returns.

Any pain or sensitivity during the recovery period is easily managed with paracetamol or ibuprofen.
