Is Invisalign Right for Me? 4 Things To Know

Invisalign is one of the world’s most popular teeth straightening treatments. The clear aligner system offers many of the benefits of fixed braces but with added convenience, discretion, and comfort.

This subtle treatment hides in plain view, meaning you can smile confidently during treatment, knowing that barely anyone will even see your aligner. Not only this, but you can even take your aligner out at mealtimes, meaning you won’t have to worry about food getting trapped.

If you’re considering Invisalign treatment, you’ll probably have several questions. One of these may be, “Is Invisalign the right treatment option for me?”

Read on to learn what you need to know and consider before committing to this smile-enhancing and life-changing treatment.

1. Your Teeth Need Straightening

Invisalign is designed to straighten your teeth. Typically, Invisalign can address:

  • Gaps between your teeth
  • Teeth that are too close together
  • Crooked teeth
  • Bite alignment issues, including crossbite, overbite, underbite, open bite, and more.

2. Your Case Can Be Fixed Using Invisalign

While Invisalign is useful in most cases, some severe and complex alignment issues may require fixed braces or a combined treatment. The best way to find out whether your orthodontic issues can be fixed using Invisalign is to come and see us for a consultation.

During your Invisalign assessment, we’ll take digital scans of your teeth and use specialist software to see how treatment could help. The beauty of Invisalign is how predictable it is. Every step is accurately plotted out using the software. In fact, it’s so precise you’ll get to see the end results on our screen before you even commit to treatment.

3. You’re Willing to Wear Your Aligner As Directed

Although we’ll plan your treatment and provide your aligners, you’re responsible for wearing them as instructed.

To get the outcome, we show you during your initial consultation, you’ll need to wear your aligner as much as possible. We suggest keeping it in at all times, except during mealtimes or while you’re brushing your teeth. This should amount to a minimum of 22 hours.

Every two weeks, we’ll give you a new aligner. Although it may look like the last one, your new aligner is ever-so-slightly different, and it’s vital you wear each one in the order they’re given. Wearing an old aligner could slow the progress of your treatment or even affect the final outcome.

You must remember to take your aligner out while eating or drinking. Food and hot drinks could damage your aligner, so keep it in a case for safekeeping when you eat. Keeping your aligner clean will not only help preserve its clarity, it’ll also minimise bacteria buildup, keeping your smile healthy.

Finally, after treatment, you’ll need to wear a retainer. This helps preserve the results you’ve worked hard to achieve. Your retainer will be like a mouthguard you’ll usually wear at night. Failure to follow this step could mean your newly relocated teeth slide back out of line.

4. You Take Care Of Your Teeth

Wearing an aligner all day, every day, could result in food debris and plaque bacteria getting trapped against your teeth. This may lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Taking care of your teeth while you’re undergoing Invisalign treatment is vital. This means regular, thorough brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash. Not only this, but you’ll also need to clean your aligner frequently too.
